The storm resulting from Hurricane Irene held off as racers completed either the 5K run or 1 mile walk on Mt. Aetna, Saturday, August 27. The race, organized by Garrett Trails and Garrett County Health Department’s Center for Behavioral Health, promotes the use of trails throughout the county and also recognizes National Addictions Recovery Month. Thirty runners participated in the 5 kilometer course over established trails along the head waters of Savage River and up and over Mt. Aetna.
Parker Jacobs of McHenry kept a 7:17 pace to lead all runners over the course finishing the race with a time of 22:37. Jacobs led most of the race and poured it on during the 700 ft ascent of Mt. Aetna. Jen Sober also of McHenry led all women with a blistering 7:22 pace finishing a full 5 minutes ahead of the second place overall female, Lydia Valenta of Frostburg.
One of the goals of the Garrett Open Recovery Race is to expose the public to the expanding trail system in Garrett County. Many participants commented on the beauty of the trail and a few observed deer and wild turkeys while completing the course. Each year the Garrett Open Recovery Race is held on a different Garrett County trail.
The Kendall trail in Friendsville was the site of the first Garrett Open which was a 5 mile race. Last year’s course was held at Herrington Manor. Bob Stephens stated that, a second goal of the Garrett Open Recovery Race is to recognize those persons who are in recovery from an addiction. September is National Recovery Month and the Garrett County Steps committee co-hosted the event to raise awareness of the resources available locally to assist persons struggling with addictions.
Steve Green, the president of Garrett Trails thanked the runners for coming out to the event and encouraged the public to take advantage of the many trails throughout Garrett County. He also thanked the sponsors including: ASI at Garrett College, ASCI, Garrett County Center for Behavioral Health, Railey Realty, Gosnell Inc.
