Big Savage Mountain Trail This is a challenging 17 mile mountain-top trail which travels over steep and rocky terrain (there is significant brush on the trail). Backpacking & primitive camping permits are available at Savage River State Forest Headquarters. hiking; leashed pets difficult 17 Northern End: Exit 29 off I-68. Head south on Beall School Road 1.25 miles. At T intersection turn left and continue on this road fro 1.25 miles to trail sign. South end of Trail. Turn North on Savage River Road go approximately 4 miles and turn right into a primative camp area. Trail can be located from this camp area.
Garrett Trail (Herrington Manor and Snaggy Mountain) Much of the trail is on old logging roads. A portion of it is on the graveled Snaggy Mountain Road. The trail is fairly level, but some long hills test your endurance on Snaggy Mountain Road. A short side trail will take you to the Maryland Champion Northern Red Oak. You will also pass a watchable wildlife area with an active beaver dam. Maybe blazed in green.\ hiking, x-country skiing; Mountain biking; horseback riding; snowmobiling; pets (under control) easy to moderate 9 The trail can be accessed along Herrington Manor Road, in the dip approximately one half mile north of Herrington Manor State Park entrance. Parking is available at this location.
Garrett Trail (Swallow Falls to Herrington Manor) This a popular trail connecting Herrington Manor and Swallow Falls parks. much of the trail is an easily navigable old logging road (old tram road from 1800's). Part of the trail is single track and rocky. Within one mile of Swallow Falls State Park the trail runs alongside a stream with hemlocks and rhododendron. Wildlife includes deer, wild turkey and black bear. Look for signs of beaver activity hiking, x-country skiing;Mountain biking; pets (under control) easy with some rocky areas 5.5 Trail can be accessed at Herrington Manor State Park trail head, located at the rear of the large parking lot near the lake.
Herrington Manor Trials The park offers swimming, boating in rowboats, canoes and paddle boats, picnicking, hiking, tennis, volleyball and 20 furnished log cabins for rental use year round. There are 4 trails of varying lengths. Trails are grass covered and broad. Terrain varies with some hill climbing and several areas are soft during wet spells. hiking; biking; x-country skiing; pets allowed at times easy 10 Rt. 219 south from McHenry to Mayhew Inn Road (2 miles past Deep Creek). Turn right on Mayhew Inn Road, travel 4.5 miles to end of road. At the stop sign turn left onto Oakland Sang Run Road, travel 0.3 miles to first road on the right which will be Swallow Falls Road. Turn right onto Swallow Falls Road and travel 1.3 miles to Swallow Falls State Park, or 4.5 miles further to Herrington Manor State Park. Red and Blue trails accessed at the concession stand by Lake. The Green trail is accessed behind the backstop at the ballfield near the tennis courts. The Yellow trail is accessed from the green trail.
Hoye Crest (Highest Point in MD) This steep climb to the highest point in MD. Backbone Mountain is a long ridge that runs diagonally southwest-to-northeast in the extreme southwest corner of Maryland, extending into West Virginia. The trail is an old road to a trail on the West VA side. There is a geo cache here and a high point log book. hiking hiking 1 Take Take 219 south of Oakland. Cross Rte. 50 intersection at Red House MD. Stay on 219 for approximately 5.5 miles, crossing into West Virginia. Approximately 0.7 miles past Silver Lake find well-marked trail head on left. Parking up trail .1 miles (4WD recommended) or park on right shoulder pull off 50 yards past trail head.
Jennings Randolph Trail Short but scenic trail across an earthen dam providing access to North Branch of Potomac and fishing spots hiking moderate-steep uphill climb 1 Follow Rte 135 approximately 13 miles east of Oakland. Right on Walnut Bottom Road got 4.3 miles; turn right go .3 miles to trail head parking.
Kitzmiller Town Trails This a short but pretty paved trail by the North Branch of the Potomac River. Combine a little walk with your visit to the Company Store selling local crafts and food. walking easy From Oakland, take 135 east approximately 11 miles; turn right on Rt 38 (Kitzmiller Road) go south approx 5 to Kitzmiller. Trail is along river.
Loch Lynn Town Trails This is a short fitness/walking trail around the town athletic fields. walking easy From Oakland, take 135 east approximately 2 miles; turn right on 560 go short distance and turn right on Third Avenue and follow Third Avenue to athletic fields. Trails are around fields
Lostland Trail This is a beautiful hike through a hemlock-laurel canyon, following Lostland Run en route to the Potomac. There are stream crossings on footbridges, a waterfall, and many opportunities to view wildlife. You can lose your cares amid the hemlock and laurel along the swift Lostland Run and forget the time gazing at Cascade Falls deep in the gorge. Short spur from parking area leads to Potomac Overlook where splendid views of the river and pristine mountains can be enjoyed. hiking; Mountain biking moderate 3.5 135 east from Oakland, Right on Gorman Road (light at Loch Lynn) Go 3 blocks, take left on MD 560. Go 1.75 miles to Bethlehem Road. Turn left on Bethlehem Road and travel 2 miles to the intersection of Bethlehem Road and Eagle Rock Road. Turn right, staying on Bethlehem Road for 1.4 miles. Turn left on Combination Road and travel 1/2 mile. Turn left on Potomac Camp Road and travel 1/2 mile to the Forest Resource Center, on the left. Top of trail park here. OR continue on Potomac Camp for 1/2 mile to Lost Land Road, make a right. Follow Lost Land to bottom for parking area and trail beginning at Potomac River.
Oakland Town Trails Oaklands fitness/walking trail includes a 1 mile loop that can be accessed at Yough Glades development on Liberty Street. In addition, the trail follows part of the Tippy Top Yough and connects to the Historic Train Station, the Pavalion and heads out route 39. walking Accessed at the Pavilian behind on 2nd and Alder Streets or at Yough Glades development on your right as you leave Oakland on Liberty Street
Potomac River Trail (Laurel Run Rd; Wallman Rd & other trail) Most of this is along old roads; but there is a section that is trail from Audley Riley Road to Wallman Road
2) Laurel Run Road-- Mountain bikers and off-road vehicle (ORV) users will particularly enjoy this dirt road that runs southward from its intersection with Wallman Road to its terminus near the Potomac River. Views from the road offer a chance to see dense areas of mountain laurel. Open to motor vehicles.
3) Wallman Road travels downhill from Laurel Run Road to a small parking lot near the Potomac River. The forest cover in this area is ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife, including wild turkey, white-tailed deer and black bears. Good birding and wildflowers. Hikers and mountain bikers can make a circuit back to their starting point by using the 3.5 mile Loop Road.
Roads open to ORV, connector trail bike/hike only moderate 10.5 135 east from Oakland, Right on Gorman Road (light at Loch Lynn) Go 3 blocks, take left on 560. 4.9 miles to White Church, turn left. 1.3 miles straight onto Audley Riley. Trail and parking on right.
