Meadow Mountain Segment
Description: The segment runs along the ridge of Meadow Mountain from Interstate 68 at Grantsville, MD to its current termination south of Frank Brenneman Road to Route 495. A trail extension would bridge an existing gap and provide passage all the way to Deep Creek Lake State Park. Interstate 495 provides a direct alignment for half of the route and the Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park may serve as a highly visible starting/ending point for the trail.

Project Status: 4. Construction Funding & Construction
Trail alignment and design have been completed. After a series of meetings with DNR this fall, we have received tentative approval for the construction of Meadow Mountain Extension. We also have a draft license agreement from University of Maryland that is being reviewed by the State’s Attorney General. Negotiations have been held with Rocklodge Trust about allowing access to the trail through their land which would complete the link from University of MD/4H Center land to the Deep Creek Lake State Park.
The Next Step: Garrett Trails is applying for construction funding for the extension of and improvement of the Meadow Mountain Trail. The first phase is to improve the trail from Frank Brenneman Road (currently a handicap hunter access road) taking care of the washout areas and ruts, improving the area where the old fire tower stood into an overlook with signs and rest benches, and constructing a trail along the edge of DNR property through University of Maryland owned property to route 495. We conceive of the second phase of construction as going across 4H center property and connecting to an existing trail on Rocklodge Trust land; however, even if this second phase never happened the extension of Meadow Mountain Trail to Route 495 would provide further access to the existing trail.
Garrett Trails with the Garrett County Board of Commissioners is applying for construction funds from the Transportation Enhancement Program and ARC construction funding.
