Description: Climbs 600 feet over 1.04 miles to the top of Backbone Ridge and one of the most spectacular views in Garrett County. Historic fire tower and remnants of the original 1930s ranger station are also found here. Trail head is unmarked at a yellow State Forest gate.
Use: Walking, Hiking Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Directions: From New Germany State Park on New Germany Road, follow McAndrews Hill Road through park ~ 1 mile to intersection with Westernport Road. Follow Westernport Road 7.9 miles over the Savage River and up the famous “Elbow” curves to the top of Backbone Mountain. Look for yellow gate on right at small left-hand curve in the road (approximately 1.5 miles after intersection with Pine Swamp Road). Parking is available at a small pull out on left hand side of road. Get directions to trailhead on Google Maps |
